Literature Text

I had seen the ad many times before.

It was just a banner, off to one side, on a site I frequently visited. It was a wonderfully-drawn image of a girl with wings and a man. Over this scene was a checklist -"Do you like:
Swords
Sorcery
Ego-stroked dragons
Arrogant she-wolves
Neurotic bad guys
Dimention-hopping aliens"

I had seen it so many times, yet I had never felt moved to click on it before. I'm not exactly sure what had possesed me at the time to do so, but my life definitely changed for the better that day.

I've loved books my whole life, but I only became seriously interested in writing when I was in fifth grade, and I picked up a copy of Redwall for a book report. It's easy to see from my early attempts at writing just how obsessed with the series I was.

Then, in seventh grade, I clicked on an ad for a webcomic called Wayrift.

Wayrift is an ongoing Final Fantasy 4 fanfiction written by two friends who met online back when the internet was almost strictly for computer nerds.

Most people probably wouldn't find a comic insperational; but it's not the comic so much as the authors themselves that inspire me.

Wayrift is far from the most popular comic on the internet, though it does have a small and extremely loyal fanbase. The authors, who typically go by Aywren and Syn, have striven to create an open and friendly community for artists and writers of all ages;I believe that they've achived this. Everyone is very kind, courtious, and polite. We come from all different walks of life, and we're all willing to accept a person for who they are. We share ideas, stories, art, and experiences. When one person experiences a tragety, then the entire community rallies around them.

The authors' dedication towards their work is nothing to laugh at, either. Wayrift just celibrated its 10th anneversery this past year. Ten years, and they haven't missed an update for as long as I've been following them. And I haven't even factored in all the side projects they do. So far, there are five books, two comics, and line work that sort of straddles the line between the two.

This is the sort of person I want to be. I want to be able to dedicate my life to my work, to have a strong, accepting community surrounding me. And most importantly, I want to be able to influnce people like they have for me. I can easily be disheartened, and without this community backing me, I probably would have given up on creating comics and stories a long time ago. But they continue on with their work, even though they barely get any recognition for it. To see such dedication makes me want to continue forwards, too.
I said I'd upload my college essay once I heard back from all my colleges.

I don't remember what I said in it exactly, and I'm too embarrassed to read it again. Hopefully there's nothing embarrassing? o///o

Aw... Mara! This is so sweet! I can't express how much it means that we've been able to give you some inspiration and hope for your own projects. I think you're a fun and extremely talented person and I hope you never stop doing what you love.

I know it's not always easy to do that, especially if it seems like no one notices. As you said above, we're not the biggest comic out there, though we've worked hard on Wayrift for many years (trust me, it's not always easy when it takes so much of my free time to complete, but I don't regret it over all). But even if one person could take something good away from our work, then it's worth it.

We're honored and blessed to have so many creative and wonderful readers, you included! :)
